Great spot. Love that they offer free exhibits. good selection of Australian artists but very limited offering outside of that. I enjoyed a visiting exhibit featuring some old traditional Pacific islander art but it was very small, considering the rich Aboriginal culture in Australia it would have been very cool to see more of this on display.
Love visiting this FREE gallery. Loads to see and do and there are very well curated exhibitions that come through it. The restaurant layout and ordering needs improvement as it's often got long queues (esp on weekends) and you feel like you're in a school canteen having to line up along a counter with a tray. Having said that, the food and coffee is very good.
A gallery worth visiting. interesting works by Australian painters a large very good section on aboriginal art. a small but worth it european painters (but it includes a fantastic Bacon) and the there is a 10 metre Captain Cook made out if shinny metal. If you are with a kid go. the museum has special plates with information that invites them to interpret and think about the art. quite honestly they work fro adults too!
Tremendous elevator. Huge. You could run back and forth. But something to note. There are two cameras in the elevator. So if you run back and forth in the elevator you run the risk of being approached by a member of staff that may tell you that they'd appreciate if you didn't do that, noting that there are two cameras in the elevator. They may tell you this in front of people you love and respect, your parents, perhaps, or the woman you love, or your old high school mathematics teacher. Or all of them at once. And that would hypothetically be quite awkward. So it's up to you, really. I think it's a bit of bait, them presenting such a tremendous elevator, expecting you not to run back and forth within it, and then firmly reprimanding you when you give into the irrepressible urge that presented itself in that situation. Anyway. Good art as well 5/5.
Very nice gallery. They have collections from Australia itself (Aborigin ethnicity etc), European, Asian; traditional, contemporary, and modern ones. The art is amazing! And all free! (Except if u want to watch certain exhibitions). They provide lounge in lower floor 2, where you can charge phones, sit in comfortable sofas, and read some magazines. Even after looking around and learning many things in this gallery, you can walk for only 5++ minutes to get to state library of NSW, Parliament house, The Mint, Barrack Museum, and finally Saint Mary Church. I loved my experience here.
